When a Halloween animatronic lights up and makes sound but no longer moves correctly, the fault is often somewhere in the small drive system: a cracked gear, a loose pulley, a stretched belt, or a component that no longer grips its shaft. The replacement may look simple, but visual similarity alone is not enough. A reliable repair starts with measurement.
Start with the symptom
A clicking or skipping sound can point to damaged teeth or a gear that is slipping on its shaft. A motor that spins without moving the mechanism can indicate a loose pulley or worn belt. Slow, inconsistent movement may come from excess friction, a stretched belt, misalignment, or more than one worn component.
Disconnect the power adapter and remove all batteries before opening the mechanism. Photograph the original gear train, belt path, washers, wire routing, and connector positions before removing anything.
Six details to compare
- Tooth count: Count every tooth on the original gear. An 8-tooth gear and a 9-tooth gear are not interchangeable.
- Gear module: Tooth spacing and profile must match the mating gear. The Gizato repair assortments use M0.5 gear families.
- Outside diameter: Measure across the widest point of the teeth. Even a small diameter difference changes how the gears mesh.
- Width and hub shape: Compare the full gear width, center hub, offsets, shoulders, and any clearance required inside the housing.
- Bore and shaft: Measure the shaft and inspect whether it is round, flattened, splined, or otherwise shaped. Never force a gear onto an unmatched shaft.
- Belt and pulley profile: Compare pulley diameter, groove width, belt diameter, cross-section, and the amount of tension in the original path.
Install without damaging the replacement
Apply installation pressure close to the hub rather than directly against the teeth. Keep the gear square to the shaft and advance it gradually. After assembly, rotate the mechanism through a full cycle by hand and confirm that nothing binds, rubs, or pulls wiring into moving parts.
The 150-Piece Animatronic Repair Kit provides four sorted M0.5 gear families, 9.3 mm pulleys, and 20 mm belts. The 176-Piece Repair System with FitKey™ adds five belt sizes, wire-management ties, and the FitKey comparison and installation aid.
Fit must still be verified
No assortment is universal. Props that appear identical can use different mechanisms between production years or even within the same model. Use the original component’s measurements—not only the decoration’s brand or name—as the basis for compatibility.
Restore every cover and guard before conducting a supervised powered test. Adult repair use only; small components should be kept away from children and pets.

Free printable measurement worksheet
Download the one-page Gizato repair worksheet. Record tooth count, module, diameter, width, bore, shaft style, and belt or pulley measurements before choosing parts. Includes a photo checklist. No email address or account is required.
Open the illustrated measurement guide and compare the repair kits. The 150-piece kit is $39.49 and the 176-piece system is $49.99, each plus $8 standard U.S. shipping and applicable tax. Neither assortment is universal; confirm fit before ordering.
