Start with the original part
Unplug the power adapter, remove the batteries, and wait for movement to stop before inspecting the mechanism. Photograph the original gear train, belt path, washers, and spacers before removing anything.
The worksheet records eight details:
- Tooth count
- Gear module, if known
- Outside diameter
- Face width
- Hub shape and dimensions
- Bore size and shape
- Shaft size and shape
- Belt profile and dimensions, when relevant
Use millimeters consistently and record what you actually measured. If a value is unknown, leave it marked unknown. A similar-looking part or a matching tooth count alone does not establish compatibility.
Take photos that make comparison easier
Include a view of the mechanism before disassembly, both faces of the removed part, its side profile, and a close view of the bore and shaft. Keep the original component and any washers or spacers together. A ruler or caliper in the photo adds useful context; clear photos still do not replace measurements.
